Yuko Fukushima is brilliant!

Dancer, biker, newscaster— Meet NHK World’s Yuko Fukushima

By Steve Trautlein

TOKYO —

Japanese TV stars are notorious for their empty personalities, so when Yuko Fukushima pulls up to our office on a low-slung Kawasaki, she makes a winning first impression. It turns out that’s the least of it. In addition to her leading role on NHK World’s flagship news program, the 38-year-old anchor is an accomplished tap dancer who holds a law degree from Keio University.

Fukushima’s wide-ranging interests, she says, can be traced to an unlikely source: chocolate. “When I was 6 years old, my family moved from Tokyo to Seattle. I didn’t speak any English — seriously, the only word I knew was ‘bathroom.’ But it happened to be Valentine’s Day, and all my classmates had prepared candy for me, even though they hadn’t met me yet. Something like that would have never happened at my school in Japan.”

Fukushima’s lifelong appreciation of foreign cultures continues on “Newsline,” a current-affairs digest that she anchors weekdays from 4-7:30 p.m. Her 30-minute segments are broadcast live at the top of each hour, and include reports on business, culture and entertainment. The show airs around the clock, serving as the crown jewel of NHK World’s programming.

Fukushima says she values her work because it provides overseas viewers with an authentic view of Japan. “I’ve always thought that Japan was under-presented — in Europe or the United States, or anywhere,” she says. “Japanese people would know all about the people in the States or Europe, but when I go there, not too many people know about Japan. So when I graduated from university and was thinking what I wanted to do, I realized I wanted a job that would present Japan.”

She’s certainly well-qualified for the role. Thanks to her seven-year stay in Seattle, Fukushima is fluent in English and familiar with foreign perspectives on her homeland. After returning to Tokyo as a teenager — “It was a lot harder to come back than to leave,” she says — she enrolled at Keio and spent a year back in the States at prestigious Brown University. Her first job out of school was at banking giant UBS, where she worked in derivative sales. In 1998, NHK World hired her on as a radio announcer, and she switched over to TV the following year. With a model’s good looks and a polished, professional delivery, Fukushima enjoys her role as the foreign face of Japan.

Yet her experiences also show that bicultural people can feel like outsiders, and that insight into two societies can lead to alienation from both. “When you look at one culture and you’re familiar with another one, you know that it’s not the only thing, and you don’t feel satisfied,” she relates. In particular, Fukushima says she gets frustrated by the overly reserved quality of many Japanese, and by the untoward bluntness of many Americans. “It’s good that I know there’s something different out there, but knowing too much also makes you realize shortcomings.”

Nevertheless, Fukushima prepares for work by immersing herself in news from both Japan and abroad. On a typical day, she’ll wake up at 8 a.m. and read a couple of local papers, then hop online and watch foreign news shows. She arrives at NHK’s Shibuya studios in the early afternoon and, as is typical of a TV program that airs live, the scene in the newsroom is bustling, leaving little time for rehearsals or meetings.

Although “Newsline” is broadcast live to 80 countries and regions, Fukushima has a knack for remaining cool in front of the camera. In fact, she gets more nervous at her tap dancing recitals, performing the hobby that she practices most weekends. “On TV, it’s more one-on-one — you can imagine people in their living room are watching you. But tap dancing, it’s a whole lot of people, and you can see them all.”

DONAIR

In Halifax, many people enjoy eating donairs. Donairs are made from pita bread, donair meat (spicy lamb), tomoatoes. onions, and milk sauce. The owners of the donair shops in Halifax are from Lebanon and they make great food. There is a famous place in downtown Halifax called "PIZZA CORNER". At Pizza Corner, there are 3 pizza/donair shops on the corners and a church at the other corner. My Halifax tradition is to buy a donair and to eat it on the sidewalk in front of the church. Usually when you eat donairs, the sauce spills from the donair onto your hand. It is very messy, very good food.
Mmmmm....goooood.

Oh yeah, I gained 6Kg on my trip!!! I'm very fat now!

I'm BAAAAAACK!

のりぴー = VICTIM???

I'm back in the blogworld!
I wanted to make a quick post today to make a prediction!
6 months to 1 year from now, Noripi will be a regular star again. I can see some patterns in the news that look like somebody is trying to save her career:
Every news story now mentions key points:
1 - She only used a little Speed (シャブ) "0.008g少ないでしょー?かわいそう。"
2- She only used it at the advice of her husband. "あの悪い旦那のせい。かわいそう。"
3- The drugs came from a foreigner. "やっぱり、外人から買った。かわいそう。"
4- There are no new pictures or video of Noripi in the news. Her "people" = "マネージメント" are protecting her image by only letting the media use old pictures and video of her - from when she was beautiful."きれいだなぁ。やっぱり悪いお母さんじゃない。かわいそう。"

I predict that in 6 months to 1 year, Noripi's carreer will be fixed and she will be a regular star again. She will come back using the image of the "victim".

Let's wait and see if I am wrong!!!

ANA to use interpreters on Narita-Taipei flights

My question is, why not hire flight attendants who can speak Japanese and Mandarin Chinese? OH RIGHT, ANA hires flight attendants based on youth and beauty - NOT BRAINS!

TOKYO —
All Nippon Airways will begin deploying onboard interpreters to better serve passengers next Monday, starting with its Narita-Taipei flights twice a week, ANA officials said Wednesday. Six female Taiwanese interpreters in their 20s, who can speak Taiwanese, Mandarin and English, were selected from 700 candidates for the new posts. Two of them can also speak Japanese, they added. At present, only Japanese flight attendants who can speak Japanese and English serve customers aboard the Narita-Taipei flights. ANA decided to deploy an interpreter for each flight on top of those attendants because the number of Taiwanese passengers on the flights has recently increased, the officials said.Wu Yi-fan, 24, one of the six interpreters, who formerly worked as a clerk at the airline, said in Japanese she will not only translate but also try to kindly attend to passengers. On ANA flights to and from Shanghai, flight attendants who speak Mandarin currently serve passengers. The airline said it is considering having onboard interpreters serve on flights to and from mainland China and Bangkok as well in the near future.Japan Airlines has already introduced an onboard interpreter system for its flights to and from South Korea.

Zero Yen House!

In 2004, Kyohei Sakaguchi published "Zero Yen House" - a book of homeless housing in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. The publication provides a look on the different constructions and materials used by homeless people in Japan. It shows the efficiency and resourcefulness of homeless people.
In 2000, architect Kyohei Sakaguchi came across this homeless camp along a riverside in Tokyo. The homeless man who was living in it used to work for a camera company and knew his electronics, so he outfitted his house with a solar panel that let him watch TV and listen to the radio. Zero Yen House for you!

Want a Big O? Talk toYour Lover

SARAH BOESVELD

Globe and Mail Update

May 13, 2009 at 10:02 AM EDT

Ladies, talk to your lover - you just might be rewarded with a toe-curling orgasm.

In a study of more than 2,000 women, British researchers found that those with higher emotional intelligence climax more often than their peers.

Emotional intelligence, the ability to monitor your own emotions and those of others, is strongly linked to the likelihood a woman will reach orgasm during masturbation and intercourse, reports the study to be published in July's issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Emotionally intelligent women tend to know what they want and how they're going to get it, says lead study author Andrea Burri, a clinical psychologist and sex researcher in the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology at London's King's College. Women with lower emotional intelligence tend to be more shy and to clam up in bed.

"The ability to express your feelings and to cope with stress is a very important factor that influences your sex life; it makes you more open to sexual stimuli," she says.

Dr. Burri and her colleagues recruited 2,035 female volunteers from the Twins UK registry, which she had been using for research on genetics and sexual ability. The women, at an average age of 50, filled out two questionnaires - the first on how frequently they reach orgasm and the second asking about emotionality, self-control, sociability and well-being.

"The basic thing is really to try to express what you feel to your partner," Dr. Burri says. "Be brave and say yeah, I want it that way and I want this."

And what will the orgasm champs do with the insights her study offers?

"They might start workshops," Dr. Burri laughs.

Feeling lonely, ladies?

By Wendy Atterberry

(The Frisky) -- In a recent column on the Huffington Post, "Why I'm Single," writer Lea Lane lists all the reasons that she's still single. Why? So she can send the URL to all the nosy, possibly well-meaning busy-bodies who keep asking her why she isn't in a relationship.

"Crappies" are women who whine to others on why they can't find a partner.

Lane presents a persuasive case; it almost made me wish for the days I, too, had the whole bed to myself. She's one of what I'll call the "Happies," women who are perfectly content with their single status.

They don't want for a companion; they love their solitude and have enough friends, hobbies, and passions to keep themselves busy.

Although, most Happies, like Lane, are "open to options, and do understand the beauty and wonder -- and blessing -- of a good relationship," they neither actively seek one nor passively hope and pray one comes their way. The Happies say they don't need a relationship to be content, and, by God, they mean it.

On the other side of the single lady spectrum, you've got the "Crappies." They're the single ladies with really crappy attitudes. Take, for example, Jezebel's Megan Carpentier, who responded to Lane's column with a list of her own, a list that not only doesn't make me a little nostalgic for my single days, it makes me sort of, well, sad -- for her.

I'm sad for the Crappies, because, as much as they say, like Megan, "I've made my peace with being single because I don't have to pretend I don't drink from the carton or sleep with one of those face masks on or watch 'Murder She Wrote' too late at night," they're whining to everyone who will listen about how much it sucks that they can't find a guy who wants to date them.

No, they'd rather stay in, whine, and have their friends write testimonials on their blogs about why they'd be so great to date.

In an attempt to hide their loneliness from themselves -- because they're sure not hiding it from anyone else -- the Crappies adopt an air of self-righteousness. "I'm probably alone because I dated when I wanted to," they tell themselves, "and got into relationships when I wanted to, and got out of them when I needed to."

As if people who aren't alone are a bunch of morons who got stuck in bad relationships that they never wanted to be in and don't have the strength to get out of. "I'm alone because I eschewed goal-oriented dating and 'trying to find someone,'" they brag.

Because, wow, there's nothing worse than actually being pro-active, particularly when the goal is happiness. That kind of stuff is for losers! That kind of stuff is for self-hating women who subscribe to "The Rules!" Except it isn't.

Ladies, if you're single and truly happy to be so, more power to you! There's no reason in the world you need to make a list or explain to anyone why you're not in a relationship.

But if you're a woman who is unhappily single and would love nothing more than having someone to share your life with, it's time to quit whining, stop making self-righteous excuses, turn off your TV, get out there, and meet people.

There's no shame in being goal-oriented and dating with purpose. There's no shame in opening your mind, being flexible, and learning to compromise. Spread the word you're on the market, tell your friends, tell your friends of friends, let your co-workers, family, and entire social network know you're looking for dates.

Take care of yourself, dress well, look good every time you go outside. Smile at people when you're out and about, make small talk in check-out lines, keep your radar up at all times. You never know when the right person for you will be rounding the next corner.

But bear in mind, YOU aren't perfect, and there's not going to be a perfect person for you. If you refuse to settle for anything less, you're going to be lonely for a very, very long time.

If you aren't prepared to open your mind a little, you might as well stay in with your "Murder She Wrote" and your crappy attitude. But, for the love of God, quit your whining. The rest of us don't want to hear it anymore.

See? Nobody is giong to do ANYTHING about this. It's all talk!

Finally, I am beginning to find some intelligent news stories about the North Korea Rocket issue. The truth is, right-wing politicians like Aso are just trying to make people frightened. Frightened people are easier to control.
NEVER trust the politicians!

Critics say Japan overreacting to N Korea rocket launch

Friday 03rd April, 02:28 PM JST

AKITA —

Crisis centers are being hurriedly set up. A nearby military base bristles with Patriot missile interceptors.

But fisherman Masami Fujiwara scoffs at all the fuss. He says he isn’t concerned a North Korean rocket may soon be flying over his head.

“We should never trust politicians,” the 68-year-old said, adding Japan’s aggressive response has only heightened tensions with North Korea. “It’s the wrong move.”

Some analysts say the government is overreacting. They worry that Japan’s threats to shoot down any rocket debris headed for its territory could backfire, because of the difficulty of doing so. The only saving grace may be that the possibility of debris hitting Japan appears low.

A similar launch in 1998 shocked Japan when the second stage of the rocket flew over its main island before plunging into the Pacific Ocean. This time, North Korea has announced the launch in advance. The rocket on the launchpad is believed to be an updated version of the Taepodong rocket that was fired in 1998.

Still, most residents appeared underwhelmed in Akita, a city on Japan’s northern coast directly across the Sea of Japan from North Korea.

“I’m not interested,” said Sueko Meguro, 59, the owner of a local noodle shop. “If North Korea is really firing a missile, go right ahead.”

Many in Japan are beginning to wonder if the tough talk was more political grandstanding than substance.

After initially hinting it might try to shoot down the rocket—which North Korea immediately said would be an act of war—Tokyo backed off. Officials now say they will only respond if fragments from the launch appear to be falling toward Japan.

South Korea and the United States have said they do not plan any military response, although they are monitoring the situation closely.

In Akita and elsewhere on the northern coast, officials are preparing for any contingency. North Korea has said the first stage of the rocket is likely to fall into the Japan Sea in a zone that ends just 130 kilometers offshore.

Crisis control officials opened an emergency center Thursday in Akita, which lies 450 kilometers north of Tokyo.

Police and rescue workers are on standby, while teachers have been instructed to keep radios and televisions on at all times starting Saturday to monitor any announcement or unexpected event during weekend school activities.

About 30 officials, including Akita Gov Sukeshiro Terata, will be on duty at the emergency headquarters this weekend.

Terata urged calm. He said the possibility of a launch failure that would send debris falling toward Japan was “one in a million.”

Some analysts question whether the unpopular administration of Prime Minister Taro Aso ramped up the rhetoric to boost its image by appearing tough and in control.

“Russia, China and the United States are regularly testing missiles in their own territories, but those are largely ignored here,” said Takao Toshikawa, an independent political analyst. “Japan is overreacting.”

Toshikawa also suggested the threat was being used as an excuse to mobilize Japan’s multibillion-dollar ballistic missile shield, which it has developed since the 1998 launch in close cooperation with the U.S.

Along with Patriot missiles, Japan now has a spy satellite of its own that can follow activity in North Korea.

“The government has spent a huge amount of money on the missile defense system, so this is a perfect chance for the Defense Ministry to show that it is on top of the crisis,” he said. “By treating it as a clear and present danger, the government is fanning the sense of crisis so that they can justify installing more interceptors.”

But Japan may have painted itself into a corner.

Japan has twice tested its ship-to-air interceptors, but has succeeded only once. And shooting down debris would likely be more difficult because of its unpredictable trajectory.

“If Japan fails an intercepting attempt, it would be a serious setback for the country’s defense policy, because people would think the costly missile defense system is not reliable,” said Minoru Morita, another political analyst.

“The Japanese government has managed to convince the public of the need for a stronger defense capability, while Aso probably regained some support by acting as though everything was under control,” he said. “But after taking it this far, Japan dare not actually try to intercept debris and fail, and end up losing everything, including their credibility.”

"Australia" SUCKS!

I just saw a commercial on the TV for "Australia". At the end of the commercial it said "大ヒット" , which is a lie. That movie is what we call in English a "flop". It cost too much, and it made no money. Nicole Kidman right now is what we would call "box office poison" which means everything she is in, FAILS!

For example, her last 4 big movies:

The Stepford Wives? FLOP!
Bewitched? FLOP!
The Invasion? FLOP!
The Golden Compass? FLOP!

And now Australia??? F.L.O.P.!!!

I bet you didn't know that!

Nicole Kidman also claims that she has never had cosmetic surgery!!! HAHAHAHAAAAAAAA!

This makes me feel sick...

I've just read this Associated Press article about the banning of a Japanese video game in the U.S. The game is being banned because it is classified as "obscene" under American laws. In America, games and pornography are not allowed to depict "rape", "sexual violence" or "sex by coercion". It is very different in Japan.

I find it interesting that in America, games in which people are murdered are ok, whereas games which depict rape, are banned. There seems to be a double standard.

Perhaps both types of games should be banned.

Many Japanese think that Americans are particularly violent people and American movies reflect this violence. However, many Americans think that Japan has serious problems of rape and paid sex with monors (援助交際) and that Japanese games, manga, and movies reflect this.

I think that both sides need to recognize their shortcomings.

I should also tell you that this story is getting VERY VERY big in the North American and European media.

This is the article:

Boycott of violent Japanese video game urged in U.S.
Tuesday 24th February, 06:27 AM JST
NEW YORK —
Anti-violence advocates are taking a stand against a video game in which players stalk and rape a mother and her two daughters.Amazon and eBay have already banned the sale of the game, called Rapelay. But New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said Monday that the game is available on other Web sites.Quinn and the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault called on all video game distributors in the U.S. to refrain from selling Rapelay.Rapelay is made by a company called Illusion, based in Yokohama. The company’s website says its products are not available for sale outside of Japan. The company did not respond to an email seeking comment.

And this is a review of the game from an American gaming website:

Review by Zigfried May 27, 2006

As much as I wish RapeLay were an awesome hentai shooter starring an enormous naked lava man (he would attack by lobbing volcanic volleys of sperm), it's not. RapeLay is a disturbing rape simulator developed by the same misogynistic dickheads who brought us Battle Raper 2 which, oddly enough, didn't contain any actual rape.

RapeLay contains a lot of rape.

In RapeLay, you rape women in the most abusive manner possible and the women learn to like it. Well-programmed or not, I can't get behind that.*

*"I can't get behind that." means "I cannot support that."

8 Japanese languages are dying out!

According to a UNESCO report, 8 languages in Japan are in danger of dying out. There are now only 15 speakers of the Ainu language. The others that are endangered are Yaeyama, Yonaguni, Okinawa, Kunigami, and Miyako in Okinawa Prefecture, Amami in Kagoshima and Hachijo which is spoken in and around Hachijojima island in Tokyo. UNESCO considers all these to be distinct languages, not dialects.Osamu Sakiyama, professor of linguistics at the National Museum of Ethnology agrees with UNESCO's assessment and said, 'Coupled with the myth that Japan is ethnically homgeneous, people tend to think that one language is spoken in Japan. But I want people to know that there is quite a diversity.'The report on Japanese languages is part of a worldwide report - the UNESCO Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger. The interactive digital version was released this week and is freely available online. A printed version will be published next month.

Government Censorship of the Internet

Today these countries censor the Internet : China, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Brazil, Ethiopia, Iran, India, Korea, Morocco, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Syria, Sudan, Thailand, Turkey, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Yemen.

The Japanese government is also planning to legislate regulations of ‘harmful’ Internet content. Now, the Liberal Democratic Party’s Sanae Takaichi is preparing to an Internet censorship law. We can see clearly how the government is preparing the public for such a law. When governments want to pass some laws which strip away basic freedoms, they have to find stories to make the public frightened. If the public are frightened, the government can say "We need to take away some fo your rights to protect you."
The recent stories in the news about "encounter" websites (出会い系) and Japanese people learning how to grow marijuana from the internet quote the NPA (National Police Agency http://www.npa.go.jp/ ) as blaming the internet. I fully believe this is the beginning of an assault against the freedom of speech and exchange of information on the internet. This will allow the government to filter information out of the public eye in Japan. I cannot expres to you how dangerous I believe this is. If you think I am overreacting, I ask you to please look at the list of countries I posted above. Japan will join that list in less than two years.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to stop this?
I have included 2 articles in which the NPA blame the internet for problems which they obviously cannot control. The NPA need to deflect the blame away from their own terrible policework.

Internet profile sites become hotbed of child sex crime, NPA reports
Thursday 19th February, 10:26 AM JST
TOKYO —
Internet profile sites, a type of social networking, have become a more dangerous source of sex-related crime for children than dating websites, the National Police Agency said Thursday in a survey. In 2008, 792 children under 18 became victims of sex-related crimes such as pornography and prostitution as a result of using profile sites. The figure surpassed 724 children who became sex-crime victims after accessing Net dating sites, the agency said. The latest NPA survey, for the first time, looked at profile sites and other social networking sites in terms of the possibility of their use for illegal sex services.NPA officials judged that criminals have been shifting their focus from dating sites to social networking sites in search of potential sex-crime victims as authorities have significantly restricted the business of dating-site operators. The NPA said it will ask operators of profile and other social networking websites to delete messages suggesting illegal sex services. In the reporting year, sex-related crime cases involving children under 18 using these sites on the Internet totaled 994, the NPA said. The number of obscenity cases came to 648 cases involving 545 victims, child prostitution and pornography 299 cases involving 204 victims, rapes 17 cases involving 15 victims and attempt murders two cases involving two victims. The number of people who became crime victims after using dating sites, including those aged 18 or older, came to 852 in 2008, down by 445 from the preceding year. The figure included 328 senior high school students, 211 junior high school students and two elementary school students. Of those under 18, 714 people, or 98.6%, accessed dating sites via cell phones, the NPA said.

Crimes linked to cannabis, marijuana spreading in Japan

TOKYO —
Sumo wrestlers, actors and college students caught for marijuana possession are apparently proving to be just the tip of the iceberg as police authorities say the number of cannabis-related crimes has risen to record levels in Japan. A National Police Agency report made available Thursday showed police departments across the country handled 3,832 cannabis-related cases involving 2,778 offenders last year, both all-time highs since the NPA began tracking records in 1956.The figure for total cases marked a 16.8% increase from the previous year, with the number of offenders rising 22.3%. There were 2,374 first-timers, accounting for 85.5% of the total offenders and posting a 20.6% year-on-year increase. As for breakdowns in age groups, the combined number of offenders in their teens and 20s went up to 1,736, or 62.5% of the total and a 10.6% rise.
The agency says a main factor in the increase appears to be numerous Internet websites that provide information officials say helps facilitate illegal acts related to marijuana, including how to grow it, indoors or outdoors, and produce it.Acquiring seeds of the plant over the Internet is relatively easy and seed trades are not illegal under current Japanese laws, making it possible for seed sellers to ward off a police search as long as they post a description noting that growing cannabis is illegal.Authorities have belatedly launched countermeasures against such deals and their efforts led to the arrest last year of a group who had engaged in Internet seed sales and delivery on charges of helping to grow cannabis.‘‘There has obviously been an increasing number of occasions in which people get cannabis seeds or learn how to grow it,’’ an NPA official said. ‘‘And there’s misunderstanding among them about the toxicity (of cannabis and marijuana). Probably that’s part of the reason they tried to get into it very easily.’’

Men See Women as Sex Objects When Looking at Sexy Calendars

Scientists revealed that calendars with sexy women and images of nude models published in newspapers make men think of women as objects. In a study men were shown pictures of models in bikinis. Scientists noticed on brain scans that when men watch such images, a certain area in the brain lights up, and that area usually lights up when men think about DIY tools as well as other objects.
Brains scans also showed that the area in the brain that men use to tune into another individual's thoughts and emotions tunes down.
"The only other time we have seen this is when people look at pictures of the homeless or of drug addicts because they really don't want to think about what is going on in their minds," mentioned the study's lead researcher Susan Fiske of Princeton University in the U.S..
It might be obvious, but still, the scientific team also discovered through brain scans that men enjoyed looking at nude women more than at fully clothed ones. The researchers presented their report on the study and its results at the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual conference where they concluded that when shown images of topless women men are led to think of women as "less than human". Fiske stated that in case there are girlie calendars in the workplace, they could lead men to sexualize their female colleagues.
"I am not saying there should be censorship but people need to know of the associations people have in their minds," outlined the professor.
When she was asked whether women had the same effect when seeing half-dressed men, Fiske stated that women were more inclined to rate age and bank balance over a man's look.

Which one?

I think we should keep the one on the left. The one on the right, we should sell to the North Koreans.

There is too much violence in the world!

So much violence. It makes me so sad..
